Basic knit stitch produces a substantial, useful, attractive and completely washable rag rug using tarn (strips cut from old cotton jersey T-shirts or fabric yardage = “t-shirt yarn”) and large (10mm) knitting needles.

Since more than two hours are needed to make a small throw rug, we will make a small hot pad or "mug rug" using exactly the same techniques as for a rug. Students will learn how to start, knit, and finish the project, and will thus be familiar with the steps for making a full-sized rug if desired on their own later on. All materials are included.

Cost: $35

Meet your teacher: Barbara Bell

“I’ve been drawing pictures since I could hold a crayon without eating it,” Barbara Bell tells people, and she still enjoys drawing pictures, although she uses pen and ink instead of crayons for

most of her work nowadays.

She also likes knitting, sewing, making pottery, playing “backup”

mandolin with whatever bluegrass band will allow her to join in, and

telling stories (her first book is being published in April 2024.) Born and raised in Ohio, Barbara moved to Canada as a teenager and lived there for most of her adult life, with two years spent in Japan as she and her husband substitute-taught conversational English to help out a traveling missionary.
